Background of the study
Language serves not only as a means of communication but also as a powerful tool for political mobilization. Among Yoruba youth in Lagos, language is employed strategically to engage, influence, and mobilize communities around political issues. Modern Yoruba expressions, interwoven with colloquialisms and digital slang, are increasingly used in social media campaigns, political rallies, and grassroots movements (Akinola, 2023). This dynamic interplay between language and political activism reinforces cultural identity while enabling a modern political discourse. However, tensions arise when traditional Yoruba language practices clash with contemporary urban slang, creating a complex landscape of identity negotiation. This study investigates how Yoruba youth in Lagos harness language for political mobilization by analyzing social media content, campaign materials, and interviewing young activists. It aims to uncover the mechanisms through which language mobilizes political support and to examine its role in shaping youth political identity (Oluwole, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite its mobilizing potential, the use of language among Yoruba youth in Lagos sometimes results in fragmented political messages, where the mix of traditional and modern expressions leads to confusion and diluted political impact (Akinola, 2023). This inconsistency hinders effective mobilization and may marginalize segments of the youth demographic.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To analyze the use of language in Yoruba youth political mobilization.
  2. To identify factors leading to message fragmentation.
  3. To recommend strategies for cohesive language use.

Research questions:

  1. How do Yoruba youth use language for political mobilization?
  2. What factors lead to fragmented political messaging?
  3. What improvements can enhance language effectiveness?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the role of language in political mobilization among Yoruba youth, offering insights for political strategists and cultural leaders. Improved language strategies can lead to more cohesive political movements and enhanced civic engagement (Akinola, 2023; Oluwole, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Yoruba youth political communication in Lagos; does not include older demographics or other regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Political mobilization: The process of rallying people for political action.
  • Language tool: The use of language to achieve political ends.
  • Yoruba youth: Young members of the Yoruba community in Lagos.
